5 Don’ts When Attending Trade Shows

Trade shows offer a unique forum to market and showcase goods and services to potential customers face-to-face. To make sure you are getting the most out of this opportunity, here are five “don’ts” to be aware of the next time you participate in a trade show.

Don’t start a conversation without knowing who you are talking to.

There are a couple of good reasons to know who you are talking to at a trade show, which is why it is important to ask a person’s name, role in their company, and reason for attending. The first reason is so you can better cater to their needs. The second reason is to prevent you from revealing too much about your business to someone who is with the competition.

Pay attention to body language.

When you are manning your trade show booth, you want all your concentration on those passing by, so it is important not to be clustered with the rest of your sales team, which can send the message to potential customers that you are unavailable. When talking with a prospect, don’t cross your arms or look away when the prospect is talking. You want to maintain eye contact and be as open and inviting as possible.

Don’t use insider terminology or lingo.

It is common to use certain words, acronyms, and jargon unique to your business and industry with your colleagues. Unless a prospect uses this business specific terminology first, avoid this language as it may not be known to your trade show attendees.

Don’t eat or drink in the booth.

Eating your lunch, having a snack, or drinking a soda behind the booth can look unprofessional to prospects and attendees. Moreover, food or drink spills can cause messes and make your booth unapproachable.

Don’t come to a show without a follow up plan for your leads.

Know what information you need to gather to allow for effective follow up of your booth attendees and leads. Knowing what points you want to discuss with leads later is not only good business, it also lends an air of personalization, letting the prospect know they are important.
